Country Art Design

Gourds are related to the squashes & cucumbers we eat today, although these  are very different in that the ones grown for crafting as they are left to mature on the vine & then dried or cured. This can take months or even years depending on the size of the gourd. There are no guarantees that the gourd you grow will mature to give a hard shell either. Gourd minefield!

The ones I craft from are either grown by myself or by a Suffolk grower. From sowing the seed, growing the vine, hand-pollenating & nurturing the fruit through to curing, cleaning, drilling, carving, burning, colouring, varnishing & finishing. I get attached to my gourds & treat them with love from start to finish.

I am self-taught, relying on my design skills & internet for guidance. My inspiration mainly comes from the gourd itself. They can be all different shapes & sizes & if one looks like a chicken to me – it will be a chicken! I try and make most of my pieces practical as well as aesthetically pleasing. I specialise in clocks, lamps & egg holders but if a gourd presents itself as something else – so be it.
